Introduction to the CAVU Resource Map

CAVU is currently in the process of implementing a resource mapping tool for each of the local communities running the Healthy Weight Initiative (HWI) clinic. We hope that this tool will support HWI case managers by providing dependable information quickly. We believe that the wiki software platform provides the necessary functions and accessibility for this resource map while remaining flexible enough for future development and growth. The software we’re using is powerful but easy to learn and use. The wiki platform has the potential to grow into a collaborative space for HWI case managers, CAVU staffers, and the greater Community Health Center (CHC) communities. If all goes well, we hope to expand the wiki to additional CAVU programs in the future.

CAVU Resource Map/Wiki Goals

The goal of the CAVU Resource Map is to improve the quality of HWI clinic referrals and encourage collaboration between CHCs. As we start collecting data from HWI patients and begin tracking their progress, we will be able to point to successful referrals and thus make meaningful recommendations to our case managers. We want the wiki to be a capacity-building tool that offers novel approaches to information and technology barriers.

Why “Wiki”?

Rather than using a centralized data management system (for which CAVU would be solely responsible), we believe that everyone should be able to contribute content to the resource map. While CAVU will be responsible for maintaining and administering the online wiki, there is no predetermined vision of what the wiki should be like. Instead, we hope that this tool will evolve with use - to develop in the direction that best serves the HWI mission.

What is a Wiki?

From Wikipedia: A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.

A wiki enables documents to be written collaboratively, in a simple markup language using a Web browser. Single pages in a wiki website is referred to as a “wiki page”, while the entire collection of pages, which are usually well interconnected by hyperlinks, is "the wiki". A wiki is essentially a database for creating, browsing, and searching through information.

A defining characteristic of wiki technology is the ease with which pages can be created and updated. Generally, there is no review before modifications are accepted. Many wikis are open to alteration by the general public without requiring them to register user accounts. Sometimes logging in for a session is recommended, to create a "wiki-signature" cookie for signing edits automatically. Many edits, however, can be made in real-time and appear almost instantly online. This can facilitate abuse of the system. Private wiki servers require user authentication to edit pages, and sometimes even to read them.

Wikis are generally designed with the philosophy of making it easy to correct mistakes, rather than making it difficult to make them. Thus, while wikis are very open, they provide a means to verify the validity of recent additions to the body of pages. The most prominent, on almost every wiki, is the "Recent Changes" page—a specific list numbering recent edits, or a list of edits made within a given time frame.[1]

Resource Map Implementation

CAVU plans to have a fully functioning online resource map by summer's end. We are currently in the planning stages but we will be contacting HWI clinic case managers in the near future to invite ideas and suggestions. Time-permitting, we would like to hold a discussion about the resource map during our July 16th conference call.

Can you set up an internal wiki for our organization?

If you would like to work with CAVU to setup a secure internal wiki for your CHC, please contact us. Include in your inquiry the specific features and functions that you would like your wiki to have and we'll be happy to assist you.

Contribute to the resource mapping project!

We want this resource map to be useful for HWI case managers but that’s only possible if we receive your input. In the future, we will be contacting with case managers individually to garner feedback about the wiki project.
